MacBook showing no power or stuck at a battery percentage? A faulty battery is one possibility, but charging adapters, USB-C or MagSafe connections, software, charging circuits and display faults can cause similar symptoms. Identify the signs before choosing a replacement part.

Start with safety

If the MacBook is visibly swollen, its case is separating, there is a burning smell, it becomes excessively hot or it has suffered a liquid spill, disconnect external power if safe and stop trying to operate it. Keep it away from flammable material and arrange suitable assessment. Do not puncture or press on a swollen battery, and do not heat the device.

1. Check the charger and its wattage

Use a compatible MacBook power adapter and cable suitable for the model. A USB-C cable that can charge a phone may not supply the power required by a laptop, and damaged adapters or cables can interrupt charging. Check the adapter, cable and mains outlet for obvious damage. When available, test with a known-good, compatible charger.

2. Inspect the connection

Check USB-C or MagSafe ports for obvious debris or damage without inserting metal tools. If your MacBook has more than one compatible charging port, note whether one behaves differently. A connector that only works in a specific position may point toward the cable or port, but testing is needed to identify the cause. Never force a damaged connector.

3. Does it turn on when connected to power?

Record exactly what happens: does the screen show a battery symbol, does the keyboard backlight work, are there fans or sounds, and does the laptop run only with power connected? These clues help separate a likely battery condition from another power or display issue. A MacBook with a black screen may still be running; an external display may help narrow the issue on some models.

4. Check macOS battery information if the computer starts

Modern macOS versions provide battery condition information in System Settings. Note whether the status recommends service or reports unusual health. High cycle count, short runtime and charging alerts can be relevant, but a single percentage reading is not a diagnosis. Software settings and temperature can also affect when charging starts or pauses.

5. Why charging can pause unexpectedly

MacBook battery-management features may intentionally pause charging to reduce long-term battery wear. Charging may also change with heavy workload, insufficient adapter power or temperature. A machine that repeatedly powers off, refuses to charge on known-good hardware or overheats still merits investigation; don’t assume every pause is normal battery management.

6. Liquid damage and intermittent power

Even a small spill can affect the keyboard, port board, battery connection or logic board, sometimes after the machine initially appears fine. Disconnect it and avoid repeatedly trying to power it on. Rice, direct heat and household sprays do not repair corrosion. A trained technician can explain appropriate inspection and the limits of what can be recovered.

Which MacBook model do you have?

MacBook Air and MacBook Pro generations use different connectors, batteries, display assemblies and internal layouts. If the machine boots, use Apple menu → About This Mac to record the model and chip. Otherwise, check the model number on the underside or purchase documentation. Information such as “14-inch MacBook Pro M3” is more useful than simply saying “Apple laptop”.

What to bring for a Bristol diagnostic

  • The MacBook itself and its charger when charging is the issue.
  • Your model identifier and a brief fault timeline.
  • Notes of any prior repair, drop or spill.
  • An independent backup if the Mac is working safely.
  • Approval from your employer or school if the laptop is managed by an organisation.

Repair options for local businesses

For teams with several affected MacBooks, send model and symptom lists, quantities, your business postcode and any operational deadline. The repair team can discuss a grouped quotation, an in-store visit or possible premises collection. Not every board-level or liquid-damage repair is suitable for on-site work.

Frequently asked questions

Will a new battery definitely fix a MacBook that will not turn on?

No. A dead or failing battery is one potential cause, alongside charger faults, port damage, circuitry, display and other issues. Diagnosis should come before buying parts.

Can an older MacBook still be repaired?

Often yes, but suitability depends on the exact model, fault, availability of parts and overall condition. We check feasibility before confirming a quote.

Will I lose my files?

Data risk depends on the fault and work required. Keep a backup when possible and ask about any data-related risks before approving repair.
